I have lots of aspirations for 2017. I love a good tradition. It might be the anthropologist in me. I love the ritual of making resolutions and mapping out a New Year. I revel in the newness of it all. I think of each New Year as a freshly tilled garden, full of possibilities. I build my vision around my hopes however lofty. Inevitably weeds will grow and insects will eat the leaves of my prized plants, but that juicy August tomato will be worth all of the hassle. It’s the same with my New Year goals. I experience challenges and setbacks but as the year draws to a close and I look back at all that I have accomplished I feel pretty amazing.
Ok. Let’s get back to my New Year plans. I kicked off this morning by doing a little re-tidying inspired by Marie Kondo’s book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (affiliate link) I told you about last month in my post. It’s my way to make room for all of the hopes I have for 2017. A trip or two to Goodwill always makes me feel lighter. I actually think getting rid of clutter helps me think more clearly. Perhaps I will look into the science of that someday.
The second action step I took this morning was to order materials to help prepare me for my Health Coach Certification. Yay me! I am so excited about it I can hardly stand it. I firmly believe this step will have a profound impact on my health, my family’s health and possibly your health. Maybe we should work together to help you meet your goals? Think about it. My third step this morning was to come to you to share all of my goals. I don’t make resolutions per say. I like the word “goals” because it feels more proactive. There is some disagreement about whether publicly sharing one’s goals is the correct action, but I find that making my goals public gives me some extra incentive to follow through.
So here they are: January detox (gluten-free, sugar free and alcohol free). I wrote a while ago in The secret is out about excluding gluten from my diet and having what appeared to me to be a number of positive impacts. I am going to repeat the no-gluten experiment this month and see if I can replicate my results. I have also written about my experience with refined sugar and cutting it out in Sugar is everywhere . It’s time to try that again as well. Lastly, I am going to go alcohol free for January too. I don’t drink a ton. The picture shown above is actually of me enjoying a non-alcoholic beer (FYI: They aren’t half bad). I have noticed over the past few months that even one drink can derail my efforts to eat healthy and exercise the following day. I am not willing to make that compromise anymore. So, bye-bye beer, wine and all other booze (for January anyway). **Side note: I may have a cheat day when The Gluten and Dairy Free Wildcat Walks Down the Aisle AKA My cousin that I wrote about in My cousin Kate and the novelty of night running.
My other 2017 goals include: self-publish a children’s book (This is already in the works and it’s going to be awesome), have a regular mediation practice (5x/week 10min each time), and have a regular strength training (min 2x each week) routine.
